Eligibility & Duties - Indiana Executive

  • County Commissioner
    • Eligibility:  Eligibility for this office is limited to people at least 18 years of age and must have resided in the county for at least 1 year and the district for 6 months before the election. The person must also be registered to vote in the election district the person seeks to represent not later than the deadline for filing the declaration or petition of candidacy or certificate of nomination. A person is not qualified to run if they have entered a plea of guilty or nolo contendere to, or have been convicted of, a felony.
    • Term of Office:  Four years with no limit on successive terms.
    • Salary:  Ranges from $6,152 to $44,043 per year, depending on county size (population and assessed valuation).
    • Duties:  The Board of County Commissioners administers all county business and may enact ordinances.
  • County Council Member
    • Eligibility:  Eligibility for this office is limited to people at least 18 years of age and must have resided in the county for at least 1 year and the district for 6 months before the election. The person must also be registered to vote in the election district the person seeks to represent not later than the deadline for filing the declaration or petition of candidacy or certificate of nomination. A person is not qualified to run if they have entered a plea of guilty or nolo contendere to, or have been convicted of, a felony.
    • Term of Office:  Four years with no limits of successive terms.
    • Salary:  Ranges from $1,360 to $20,825 per year, depending on county size (population and assessed valuation).
    • Duties:  The county council holds control over budget and financial matters. It adopts the county budget, fixes the tax rate, authorizes the incurring of county indebtedness, and appropriates funds.
  • County Auditor
    • Eligibility:  Eligibility for this office is limited to people at least 18 years of age and must have resided in the county for at least 1 year. The person must also be registered to vote in the election district the person seeks to represent not later than the deadline for filing the declaration or petition of candidacy or certificate of nomination. A person is not qualified to run if they have entered a plea of guilty or nolo contendere to, or have been convicted of, a felony.
    • Term of Office:  Four years with a limit of two successive terms.
    • Salary:  Ranges from $17,273 to $55,867 per year, depending on the county size (population and assessed valuation).
    • Duties:  Fiscal officer of the county - keeps accounts and issues warrants for payment of claims allowed by county commissioners; prepares tax duplicates showing value of property and taxes assessed against each taxpayer.
  • County Treasurer
    • Eligibility:  Eligibility for this office is limited to people at least 18 years of age and must have resided in the county for at least 1 year. The person must also be registered to vote in the election district the person seeks to represent not later than the deadline for filing the declaration or petition of candidacy or certificate of nomination. A person is not qualified to run if they have entered a plea of guilty or nolo contendere to, or have been convicted of, a felony.
    • Term of Office:  Four years with a limit of two successive terms
    • Salary:  Ranges from $16,649 to $55,867 per year, depending on county size (population and assessed valuation).
    • Duties:  Collects, retains custody of, and disburses county funds; collects local and state general property taxes and other taxes, for all units in the county
  • County Sheriff
    • Eligibility: 
    • Term of Office:  Four years with a limit of two successive terms
    • Salary:  Ranges from $20,020 to $77,500 per year depending on the county size (population and assessed valuation).
    • Duties:  Serves as conservator of the peace, jailer, and general law-enforcement officer; serves official court papers.
  • Prosecuting Attorney
    • Eligibility: 
    • Term of Office:  Four years with no limit of successive terms
    • Salary:  If serving full-time, the prosecuting attorney is paid an annual base salary of $85,000. If serving only part-time, the salary is equal to 60% of the base salary. The annual minimum salary paid by the state to a full-time prosecuting attorney is equal to the minimum salary of the circuit court judge of the same judicial circuit as the prosecuting attorney.
    • Duties:  Represents the state of Indiana and prosecutes violators of the state statutes in various courts having criminal jurisdiction.
  • Clerk of the Circuit Court (County Clerk)
    • Eligibility:  Eligibility for this office is limited to people registered to vote in the election district the person seeks to represent not later than the deadline for filing the declaration or petition of candidacy or certificate of nomination. A person is not qualified to run if they have entered a plea of guilty or nolo contendere to, or have been convicted of, a felony.
    • Term of Office:  Four years with a limit of two successive terms.
    • Salary:  Ranges from $16,649 to $55,867 per year, depending on county size (population and assessed valuation).
    • Duties:  Carries out clerical duties of the county courts, certain election responsibilities, and issuance of various licenses and collection of fees.
  • County Coroner
    • Eligibility:  Eligibility for this office is limited to people at least 18 years of age and must have resided in the county for at least 1 year. The person must also be registered to vote in the election district the person seeks to represent not later than the deadline for filing the declaration or petition of candidacy or certificate of nomination. A person is not qualified to run if they have entered a plea of guilty or nolo contendere to, or have been convicted of, a felony. No medical background or training is required, but is recommended. Once elected, all new and deputy coroners must complete a pre-determined number of hours of continuing education in the medical field.
    • Term of Office:  Four years with a limit of two successive terms.
    • Salary:  Ranges from $1,608 to $62,700 per year, depending on the size of the county (population and assessed valuation).
    • Duties:  Determines the manner of death in cases involving violence or casualty, or when someone is found dead in unexplained circumstances.
  • County Recorder
    • Eligibility:  Eligibility for this office is limited to people registered to vote in the election district the person seeks to represent not later than the deadline for filing the declaration or petition of candidacy or certificate of nomination. A person is not qualified to run if they have entered a plea of guilty or nolo contendere to, or have been convicted of, a felony.
    • Term of Office:  Four years with a limit of two successive terms.
    • Salary:  Ranges from $15,164 to $48,454 per year, depending on county size (population and assessed valuation).
    • Duties:  Preserve public records such as deeds, mortgages, leases, and articles of incorporation.
  • County Surveyor
    • Eligibility:  Eligibility for this office is limited to people registered to vote in the election district the person seeks to represent not later than the deadline for filing the declaration or petition of candidacy or certificate of nomination. A person is not qualified to run if they have entered a plea of guilty or nolo contendere to, or have been convicted of, a felony.
    • Term of Office:  Four years with no limit on successive terms.
    • Salary:  Ranges from $1,645 to $46,124 per year, depending on county size (population and assessed valuation).
    • Duties:  Surveys and keeps records of all section corners throughout the county and has charge of all ditch construction and maintenance in the county.
  • County Assessor
    • Eligibility:  Eligibility for this office is limited to people at least 18 years of age and must have resided in the county for at least 1 year and must also own real property located in the county upon taking office. The person must also be registered to vote in the election district the person seeks to represent not later than the deadline for filing the declaration or petition of candidacy or certificate of nomination. A person is not qualified to run if they have entered a plea of guilty or nolo contendere to, or have been convicted of, a felony.
    • Term of Office:  Four years with no limit of terms.
    • Salary:  Ranges from $1,645 to $51,484 per year, depending on the size of the county (population and assessed valuation)
    • Duties:  Exercises general supervision over all property assessments made within the county.
